Dolgellau is a handsome and traditional slate built market town at the head of the Mawddach estuary, arguably one of the most scenic estuaries in Wales. The town is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the southern Snowdonia National Park and is a well known centre for walking, climbing and mountain biking, as well as game fishing, cycling and golf, making an ideal base for touring the area.

The world class mountain biking centre of Coed y Brenin and its red bull trail are only a few minutes away whilst the challenging Cader Idris ( 2,927ft - 878m ) dominates the landscape.

The area is popular for bird watchers, with the red kite feeding centres and the ospreys nesting site a few miles down the road. Herons can be seen regularly just across the field in the river and in the estuary.

For the shooting enthusiasts we have the Dovey Valley clay pigeon shooting ground and the Mid Wales shooting ground within easy reach by car.

For those with a musical ear Dolgellau hosts the folk rock music festival each July. Dolgellau is also famous for its royal connection, supplying Welsh gold for the royal family wedding rings from the St David's gold mine, where gold was first discovered in 1864.

The popular small seaside resort of Barmouth is ten miles away at the mouth of the Mawddach estuary and a few miles to the east is the largest fresh water lake in Wales, Lake Bala, a Mecca for water sports enthusiasts with sailing activities, canoeing and whitewater rafting throughout the year. The Bala Lake narrow gauge railway skirts the shore offering a more leisurely view of the lake.
